Job Description

Who are Flying Object?

Flying Object is a small, friendly, unconventional creative agency. We make work for clients, usually brands - especially in tech - or cultural institutions and charities, that is culturally interesting and delights audiences, as well as delivering meaningful impact.

Work highlights include an uninformative dating advice bureau for Twitter, new artist commissioned imagery to represent AI for DeepMind, a personable campaign aimed at micro businesses for Monzo and a paid social and OOH campaign for educational app Quizlet. You can see some of our work for clients like YouTube, Google, Tate, KEF, Cancer Research UK and Wellcome at weareflyingobject.com.

Who are we looking for?

We’re looking for a brilliant mid-weight Marketing Manager with agency experience to join our team of 13 on a two day per week, contract basis and lead on the agency’s own marketing.

Our new marketing plan and content strategy was agreed in January and our business-as-usual marketing has been running smoothly - website, content, social channels, newsletter - with (approximately) quarterly campaigns involving a bit of press outreach. While continuing this, we plan to also refine things in Q1-2 based on what’s been working and get more creative and playful with what we do.

The key responsibilities of the role are:

  • Managing the implementation of Flying Object’s business-as-usual marketing activities, ranging from social media and website to press and awards, according to the marketing plan
  • Identify, plan and manage the timely deployment of marketing and PR campaigns around stand-out moments in our marketing calendar
  • Ensure consistent branding and messaging, and develop marketing collateral as required to maximise lead generation
  • Preparing marketing activity reports and be responsible for developing future plans based on insights
  • Develop our marketing plan, in support of our company strategy and new business activities
  • Taking on new initiatives and working them into our workflow, including better use of Google Analytics, improved positioning and messaging, and improving how we use specific channels like the newsletter and LinkedIn

You’ll be reporting into our new business lead, working closely with our Studio Manager and Production Assistant but owning your areas of responsibility, with the opportunity to use the time to develop our marketing capabilities in line with your expertise. We are a close knit team with a fun and collaborative working culture, so hiring someone who aligns with our ‘Good Vibes’ values is very important to us.

Please note, we are currently operating a hybrid office working policy where the team is required to work in our office in Farringdon at least 50% of the time per month, with every Wednesday in the office all together. Because facetime and relationship building will be key to this role, you would ideally be available to work in the office two days a week at least for the first three months as you get embedded into the team, with one of those days being a Wednesday and the other being flexible.

Essential skills and experience

  • 3+ years of experience in B2B marketing for creative agencies
  • Creative and innovative, with experience identifying target audiences and devising marketing activities that engage and inform
  • Practical experience and understanding of social media channels, email marketing, digital content creation and CMS
  • Numerate, with the ability to produce reports and derive valuable insights and analysis
  • Excellent team player and strong interpersonal skills
  • Excellent planning and project management skills
  • Comfortable using Google Workspace and Slack
  • Experience of PR, writing copy for websites, social and press and Google Analytics an advantage

Strengths and Personal Attributes

We would like to see candidates who meet the following criteria:

  • Has a genuine interest in Flying Object’s work
  • Interested and invested in keeping our marketing strategy and comms fresh, exciting and engaging
  • Enjoys saying ‘Yes, we can find a way’, and also ‘I think there’s a better way’.
  • An owner who will take responsibility, and a sharer who is happy to hand things over
  • Comfortable with tight deadlines and calm in a storm
  • Great attention to detail
  • A clear communicator who understands the value of good communication, and can share ideas, plans and instructions clearly and effectively, verbally or in writing
  • Share our ‘Good Vibes’ values

Remuneration and timeline

We would like to offer the chosen candidate a fixed term contract (6-12 months) to be agreed with the individual. Depending on experience we are offering a prorated salary range of £45-50k, or equivalent freelance day rate if preferred. There will be a 3 month probationary period.

We are hoping to agree on the chosen candidate by the week of the 29th of May following the successful completion of one phone screen and one interview with the team. We would like the candidate to start as soon as possible following this.
