Senior Graphic Designer

We are looking for an experienced graphic designer to join our team. You must have very strong typography skills and experience working in interactive contexts. You take initiative and are capable of independently expanding Grilli Type’s visual worlds. This posting is for a four days a week position (MON—THU) with a start in January or February 2024. We are looking for candidates in NYC or Berlin. All candidates with at least five years of industry experience are considered.

Who we are

Grilli Type is a design studio specialized in typeface and graphic design. Founded in Switzerland in 2009, we are now active on a global scale with a partially remote team working from across Europe and North America. Our focus is on deliberately growing our typeface library, strengthening our profile, and having a positive impact on the design scene. Each new release is accompanied by a matching website that showcases the typeface, like our recent ones for GT Planar and GT Maru.

We take a collaborative view of our work and you’ll be working with the team in a variety of different constellations. We highly value a welcoming and healthy work culture at Grilli Type. All employees work a maximum of four days a week to ensure your ability to grow your work and life with us — but also beyond us. Work days are eight hours long. We provide four weeks of paid vacation throughout the year with unlimited sick days, and we close for two additional weeks of paid holiday over Christmas. You can work from other locations for limited amounts of time (up to one month per year, more possible at GT’s discretion), for example while traveling or if you need to take a break from where you usually live.

Who you are

We are a small company, so you will wear many hats. You will be working with members across our team to strongly influence our future visual output and define the creative direction. You will be both designing by yourself as well as with collaborators. You will report to the two founders of Grilli Type who will continue to be intimately involved with Grilli Type’s design.

Leading our future design work on the ground, you must be a strong creator of visual worlds utilizing typography, illustration, color, and iconography. You will help us conceive of the visual expression for each of our typeface releases. You lead the implementation of our design strategy, the visual aspects and art direction of our social media, and develop physical products. On a day to day basis, you might work on the visual world for an upcoming typeface, create digital and physical promotional materials, and provide feedback to others on their designs.

You must be eager to start new creative endeavors and be ready to create unique visual expressions that fit into a larger whole.

You must have very good English skills in order to efficiently present and discuss work together.

Very strong typographic and layout skills are important, as are conceptual thinking and high precision in creating final assets. You should have a good understanding of designing for motion and interaction, but don’t need to be an actual motion designer.

While we work from many different locations at Grilli Type, we are only looking for candidates working from NYC or Berlin for this position. If you don’t live in one of these locations yet, you must be legally able to work from one of those two cities, we are not able to provide work permits or visa help.

This is not a type design position.

Requirements

- At least five years of professional graphic design experience

- Ability to develop great concepts, visually and thematically, and execute them at a high quality level

- Very strong typography skills

- Illustration skills preferable, or experience art directing illustrators

- Understanding cultural contexts of contemporary design

- Ability to present your designs in a convincing and easily understandable manner

- Very organized and documenting your processes well

- Self-starter with solid work ethic

- Experience working in small teams (not just on your own or in huge teams)

- Can legally work from either Berlin or NYC

- Good English skills

Nice to haves

- Started your own side projects (Grilli Type started as one!)

- Basic type design experience

- Basic coding experience

- Motion design experience
