JOB TITLE: Head of Design

REPORTS TO: Managing Director

CONTRACT: Full time. Flexible between 32-40 hours per week, Monday – Friday.

SALARY: Dependant on experience

Motive is a multi-disciplinary studio specialising in design, production and installation for creative retail and commercial interior projects. Made up of a team of Project Managers and Designers we are based in a studio in Elephant and Castle.

We are a certified B Corp, committed to local and ethical production and working for a more environmentally conscious industry.

The Head of Design will lead a growing team of both full time and freelance designers. Encouraging creativity and innovation in the studio whilst managing the delivery of design projects to our clients.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

- Work as lead creative on design projects delivered by the studio.

-Direct highly conceptual projects, which feel new and unseen.

- Creatively direct through moodboards and sketches to kick off design projects.

- Manage the delivery and execution of design documents for client facing presentations.

MANAGEMENT

- Organise the design team workflow on multiple projects in parallel

- Manage the Design team project workload on Monday.

- Define how design projects are delivered to clients.

- Quote for the Design Team billable hours alongside the Project Management team.

- Manage the delivery and sign off of high quality illustrations, 3D models, renders, drawings of intent and artwork files.

-Collaborate with the Production team on project specific design related problem solving.

-Work with the Head of Production and external advisors to ensure that Health and Safety, CDM and Building Control regulations are considered within all designs. Additional can be provided if required.

- Manage the hiring and recruitment of all new design team employees including freelancers.

- Maintain design freelancers database alongside the Studio Coordinator.

-Successfully manage contracted members of the design team with weekly 1:1 sessions and quarterly reviews.

-Develop ways for KPI ‘s and targets to be met by the design team alongside the Managing Director.

RESEARCH AND INNOVATION

- Maintain an awareness and understanding of new trends and materials.

- Attend design events and exhibitions throughout the year. Managing a design calendar with the Design Team for events in London and Europe.

-Develop Motive design services to ensure they are inline with industry change.

IN-HOUSE DESIGN

- Act as the guardian of all Motive brand standards

- Implement change/improvements to design team ways of working where necessary

- Sign off and oversee Motive website and social media

- Manage training of design team staff in studio or on external courses.

REQUIREMENTS:

• Exceptional design and communication skills

• Experience working within the retail design industry, delivering projects including but not limited to pop up shops, window displays, retail activations and commercial interiors.

• Experience in successfully managing design teams made up of contracted and freelance staff.

• Expertise in developing, guiding, and managing all stages of the design process including strategy, feasibility, concept, and technical design

• Experience in leading client pitches

• Proven experience managing design deadlines and timelines at various project durations.

• An interest in low impact and ethical production

• Availability to work in the studio a minimum of 4 days per week.

PROGRAMMES:

Essential: Sketch Up / Rhino, V Ray, Adobe Suite and Vectorworks

Non-essential: Monday, Slack, iCal, Dext
