Job Description

Want to join a growing global company and work with some of the best known companies around the world? We're on the lookout for designers to help us create exceptional experiences for our clients and their customers. We are particularly looking for graphic designers who have an interest and experience in cartography and digital mapping design skills. You will be based primarily in our London studio and work as part of the wider global team of designers, planners, strategists and researchers across all stages of our projects. You have the opportunity to deliver innovative wayfinding and information systems for the world’s leading cities, organisations and institutions.

Applied Information Group is an award-winning multi-disciplinary consultancy that designs the interactions between people and the built environment. We offer a career in an important field at the intersection of design and planning with clients around the world, and are looking for people who have an active interest in the creative industries including architecture, urban design, digital or graphic design.

About the role

Working at Applied means working on all aspects of the design process. From research, through strategy and concept, to detailed design and implementation. We expect designers to be motivated and passionate, with a keen graphic eye and ambition to deliver projects of the highest quality.

The focus of your work will be map building and designing early in the design phase, followed by the mastering and artworking of print and digital maps in later project phases. You may be called upon to work on other design tasks.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for someone who has an interest in developing expertise in designing for how people navigate, understand and experience the built environment. You will have a real opportunity to make your mark, develop and grow and there is the opportunity to travel as part of your role.

What is key to our work is being able to design with the user at the heart of all decisions. Maps are often key components of the systems we design. You will already have wayfinding design experience with a focus on mapping design. You may have a background in a related field such as mapping UX or information design. You would need to be comfortable working with clients and delivering presentations, with the support of the senior design team.

You will have:

  • 3–5 years’ experience in wayfinding. You may have a background in mapping UX or information design;
  • A solid understanding of user-centered design principles, and an ability to ideate, visualise and iterate strong design concepts;
  • Experience of mapping design/production, including experience with GIS software such as QGIS and/or Adobe Illustrator and mapping plug-ins such as MAPublisher;
  • Experience involving digital mapping design (using platforms such as Mapbox). Mapping products we develop as part of our wayfinding systems often take the form of static and digital maps;
  • An understanding of mapping databases and how map data layers define the structure of content management systems;
  • The ability to take on a project ownership role, collaborating with wider teams, holding client relationships and taking your design from concept through to delivery;
  • A portfolio that demonstrates graphic design experience and a dedication to the craft of your final designs (strong visualisation skills);
  • The ability to talk and write articulately about your decision making and the developmental work behind your designs. At Applied we like design thinkers who champion the meaningful as much as the beautiful;
  • As well as being highly collaborative, you will be proactive in approach, and efficient at working on your own initiative;
  • The ability to conduct relevant research to support project deliverables and objectives and present your findings clearly and logically;
  • Proficiency in core Adobe Creative Suite applications and office software. The company predominantly uses Google Workspace (Slides, Docs, Sheets)

Nice to haves but not essential

  • An understanding of industrial and product design processes including 3D modeling/rendering would be very valuable when working alongside our industrial design team;
  • Experience involving branding, industrial/product design, exhibition design, editorial design are also highly appreciated;
  • Experience with BIM software including Revit;
  • ArcGIS experience beneficial;
  • Python scripting beneficial;
  • Fluency in languages in addition to English is an advantage

Interested but not sure if you’re the right fit? Please get in touch with us to have a discussion about the role.

What we offer

  • A team of passionate people who genuinely care about what they do and the standard of work they produce
  • Hybrid working - work from home and the company office in London
  • Cash health plan allowing you to be reimbursed for a wide range of both essential and everyday healthcare expenses
  • 28 days holiday (including Bank Holidays) increasing by 1 day for each year you have worked (up to a maximum of 3 days)
  • Salary sacrifice pension scheme
  • Enhanced maternity and paternity leave
  • Team socials
  • Learning and development budget
