Job Description

About the role

Queen Mary Students’ Union is looking for a Graphic Designer to work at the heart of the Students’ Union to help all students love their time at University.

You won’t find another in-house role like this, spanning multiple brands across our charity and company. As an organisation, we provide ground-breaking student activities, campaigns and opportunities for students. Our mission is “To Listen, To Act and To Improve Students’ Lives’ and we work towards objectives such as building an authentic student voice, supporting meaningful connections and prioritising students’ mental health and wellbeing. We also operate two bars, two shops, a café, hospitality services and Sport & Fitness Centre. The profits from these venues fund the game-changing campaigns and projects from and for our passionate students. Previous campaigns have included Mental Health Awareness during exams, LGBT+ History Month, SpringFest, Decolonise the Curriculum and many more. Every year sees fresh ideas and campaigns from our elected student reps.

In this role, you will take projects from start to finish. Meeting with a staff member or student representative to hear their ideas and then working closely with them to create their campaigns, sell their products, get more gym members, fight for students’ rights and much more. You can be sure that no day will ever be the same, one day you could be designing a cocktail menu, the next co-planning our Black History Month campaign. Our design style is fun, exciting and vibrant, led by the latest Gen-Z and youth trends.

You will be managed and supported by our Design & Communications Manager, who is currently working on our refreshed brand. Our design style is fun, exciting and vibrant, led by the latest Gen-Z and youth trends. You will get freedom with our brand and support the new brand roll-out. We’re a small team, so there’ll also be plenty of opportunities to make key decisions from brief to roll-out. So, in addition to artworking, if you think of exciting ways to connect with our students, you can explore it and make it happen.

About You

To join us you’ll need to need to be creative and full of ideas, with experience of graphic design and the Adobe Creative Suite. You’ll need a clear understanding of design & branding principles, excellent organisation skills and ability to work as part of our team to meet project briefs and deadlines. Our values are at the heart of all that we do, you’ll need to ensure you apply them throughout your work.

Benefits

We offer competitive salaries, access to a generous pension scheme, 30 days’ leave per annum (pro-rata for part-time/fixed-term) plus 4 University Closure days, a season ticket loan scheme and access to a comprehensive range of personal and professional development opportunities. In addition, we offer a range of work life balance and family friendly, inclusive employment policies, flexible working arrangements, and free gym membership to the on-campus Sport & Fitness Centre.

Queen Mary’s commitment to our diverse and inclusive community is embedded in our appointments processes. Reasonable adjustments will be made at each stage of the recruitment process for any candidate with a disability. We are open to considering applications from candidates wishing to work flexibly.
