Designer for The Economist

The Economist is a global news company covering international business and world affairs, first published in 1843. We deliver our content through a wide range of formats from the magazine, websites and apps, film and audio.
Role description
Our design team is expanding. We’re hiring for a junior design role in our editorial offices in central London.
The Graphics team comprises creative designers and picture editors. Some of the designers are print layout and commissioning specialists, others are animators with digital and social media as their main focus. We are looking for a designer to help across the full range of work that spans the design desk responsibilities. Our team of designers work closely with editors and production teams. They also work closely with the social media team. You’ll be hands-on with some of our flagship products, including the magazine, the website, daily app, newsletters, social media and other products.
You should demonstrate a keenness to understand the way all of our products need to share our core design values and to be able to meet tight deadlines using templates and efficient processes. Attention to detail, a strong interest in design and typography and respect for deadlines are all things we will be looking for.
As our digital products grow we are also looking for abilities in animation and an understanding of different platform requirements.

Self-motivated team player with the ability to perform well under pressure
Relevant experience
Experience of (or interest in) working with an editorial product
An interest in global politics and current affairs
Friendly and receptive demeanour
A design degree or equivalent qualification
Good communication skills and fluency in English
The right to live and work in the UK
Hours: Primarily 10am-6pm - Monday-Friday with press day variations and possibility of some weekend overtime.
Start date: ASAP
Salary: £TBC
