Job Description

Midweight brand designers — join us!

Your primary job is to bring fresh ideas and positive energy to everything you do. You are also a versatile and diligent do-er: helping the teams you collaborate with drive projects forward by creating, developing and crafting multi-faceted brand toolkits; and then systemising, rationalising, and implementing them. You have a growth mindset and are ambitious to learn and develop.

With at least 3 years’ experience, the ideal candidate will already have experience in brand identity creation, and will be a versatile designer able to adapt their style and approach, appropriate to different briefs. You take equal pride and joy in great ideas and beautiful craft, and everything about your work is underpinned by clear rationale.

Typographic flair and rigour are essential foundational skills, but your ability to bring an illustrative element to your work is a big bonus — be it through custom type, graphic asset and pattern work, or experimental image-making.

You love working as part of a team, but you’re very capable of looking after your own workflow, and getting stuff done when it’s needed. Either way, you’re empathetic to the needs and opinions of others and wide open to trying different ways of doing things.

We run a hybrid work-week, with everyone in our London studio together on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and the rest of the week flexible.

Duties & responsibilities

  • You will primarily work as part of a design team, supporting senior creatives on client projects, though sometimes you may be asked to lead a component of a bigger project, with high-level creative direction; or own a small project of your own, working in collaboration with a project manager. You will be expected to develop, present and own a creative route at brand identity concept stage
  • You will also collaborate with strategists, digital specialists, and project management and director roles on other aspects of our brand strategy, identity, and digital projects, applying design thinking, visual design, and research skills to projects
  • You will be expected to take responsibility for what you deliver – whether that’s one visual or a complete design route – and present it with a clear creative rationale
  • You’ll also be expected to contribute to the creative culture at MA

Your capabilities

A midweight designer is:

  • An inventive, original, ambitious, surprising thinker — and able to generate multiple ideas and approaches to a design challenge
  • A good editor of your own ideas, and also a great listener and interpreter of other perspectives and feedback. You are able to ‘grow’ the ideas of others
  • Able to think and work in a logical, systematic and rational manner
  • Dedicated to building graphic design craft skills and capability, and an appreciation and understanding of other specialisms
  • Able to write clear, articulate design rationale for presentations and guidelines, or instructions for third parties such as a printer or developer, or internal handover notes
  • Keen to understand the bigger picture and contribute to the wider strategic conversation
  • Plugged into what’s new and interesting in the world
  • Passionate and persuasive presenting in person
  • Highly collaborative, able to connect and work well with other designers, strategists and client services roles

Your attitude

Midweight designers are:

  • Committed, and creatively hungry
  • Energetic and positive, up for any challenge
  • Determined and tenacious enough to see things through
  • Constantly challenging themselves to do their best work
  • Generous, able to share ownership, never precious, never protective
  • Open-minded and flexible, constantly looking for new ways to make stuff happen and make the design better
  • Unafraid to try (and fail)
  • A growth mindset: always hungry to learn, always ready to share
  • Never afraid to offer an opinion — or ask others theirs. You are developing your own point of view, but have a healthy appetite for the perspectives, opinions and insights of others in the business. And are respectful, and artful at balancing, the priorities of those with more experience or seniority.

IT/Technology skills

You should be highly proficient in:

  • Adobe Creative Suite: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign

Confident in adopting:

  • Figma/Figjam (primarily for collaboration, workshops etc, but also as a design tool)
  • Google Workspace: Slides, Docs, Sheets

And ideally have ample capability in one or more of the following areas:

  • Motion: After Effects, Cinema 4D, Premiere Pro, Final Cut
  • User experience: process flow, wire-framing
  • Front-end website/product design: from concept through to documentation

We look forward to connecting with you!
