About this role at Substance / about you

You are part of the team responsible for taking social video content to the next level by bringing flair, creativity and proactivity to the offering. You will need a drive to succeed and desire to improve, continually developing and enhancing the quality of our work.

You are editing from feature films, console game source materials and filmed footage (both internal and external sources). You are responsible for working on both short and long form video content, creating exciting and engaging edits of the highest quality for use across social media, digital media, cinema and broadcast to the correct technical specification. You provide quality assurance for the video output of the studio.

The ability to take briefs and transform them into engaging audience specific content for multiple platforms is essential. A complete understanding of the production lifecycle is required.

As the most experienced editor in our team, you are the source of expertise for video and audio editing within our studio and be able to guide and train other members of the team. Experience managing people, mentoring and showing leadership qualities will be important in this role.

You are a creative individual with a skill for visual storytelling, able to construct a narrative primed for user consumption and engagement. Whether this is a 15s social spot or a 3 minute long featurette you will be adept at creating a compelling visual story for any end user.

This is a client-facing role and so the ability to build and maintain relationships is key. As is communicating between different departments and line managers internally.

This role will be key to the development of the studio and as such there is room to advance and grow your career within this.

Key Skills

  • 4-6 years experience in a similar role
  • A passion and ability for storytelling and visuals
  • Experience of a wide range of HD, UHD, HDR, RAW and VFX workflows
  • Knowledge of file-based production processes and content production systems
  • Understanding of the fundamentals of audio and video, including digital technologies and formats
  • Ability to communicate with confidence and act assertively when required
  • Experience of a busy production or similar environment and the ability to work calmly under pressure
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with a wide range of people at different levels
  • Advanced problem-solving skills and the ability to apply them to operational situations
  • An understanding of marketing and enthusiasm in social media
  • Staying up to date with new trends and technologies to help us stay ahead of the curve

Technical knowledge/experience

  • Strong experience across Social Media, online and offline media and broadcast
  • Detailed knowledge of video codecs, file formats and specs for web and beyond
  • Expert knowledge of Premiere Pro
  • Working to good knowledge of After Effects
  • High level audio editing and sound design experience
  • Strong knowledge of colour grading

Role Responsibilities

  • Provide mentoring and training of colleagues in technical post-production workflows and technologies/equipment
  • To push the boundaries of what is possible with the briefs we are given and the resulting ideas and output we provide
  • To be a source of knowledge for narrative and storytelling within editing
  • To be a source of knowledge on technical video editing, formats, aspect ratios, styles and durations for all forms of video edits, including but not limited to social video, longform video, trailers, featurettes, originated content
  • Responsibility for quality control of all media and materials to ensure broadcast level standards are maintained
  • To work alongside Senior Project Managers/Producers in building out our offering as a business and as a service for full scale video production
  • To be looking ahead with the Planning team at projects and resourcing
  • To be researching, testing and implementing new workflows for the video team alongside Senior Project Managers/Producers and attending technology conferences and conventions with Senior Project Managers/Producers leading to the development of new post-production workflows
  • To fully debrief after larger projects and take learnings from those into new projects
  • To work alongside and align with other departments more in an effort to cross-pollinate and bring in future business with Senior Project Managers/Producers for the video team
  • To proactively drive own development and keep up to date with latest video technology/skills
