Job Description

Founded in 2020, a.p. is a bookstore oriented around art, located in the Berlin neighborhood of Wedding. The store was opened in partnership with Callie’s, an experimental art institution and residency program located in the same building complex.

The manager of a.p. is responsible for ensuring smooth day-to-day operations of the bookstore as well as strategizing its direction and budget.

We are looking for someone with an entrepreneurial spirit who is organized, responsible, passionate about books and publishing, and interested in steering a small independent bookstore.

The ideal candidate has relevant experience and can communicate confidently in both German and English, is a capable organizer of imaginative programming, and interested in a full-time (40 hours/week) in-person role in Berlin that offers creative autonomy and room to grow.

Specific responsibilities of the job include:

  • Strategize the direction of the store and its priorities
  • Propose and implement creative ways to expand the profile of the store
  • Oversee the store’s budget and set realistic monthly and annual targets
  • Conceptualize, plan, and execute events
  • Oversee workflow within a.p. as well as with Callie’s
  • Schedule and manage staff, including vacation, sick leave, etc
  • Ensure office and shop supplies are maintained
  • Oversee the maintenance of the inventory and its interaction with the POS and online channels, with assistance
  • Oversee webshop
  • Cultivate and maintain an international network of publishers and distributors
  • Draft and send the a.p. newsletter, with assistance

This role requires use of some Adobe programs and Google formats (Sheets, Docs, and Drive). Some evening hours are necessary during events.

Please note that some physical labor is needed to shelve books, set up and deinstall events, and to move between the first and second floors of the shop.
