THE ROLE

Notion have an opportunity for an experienced and commercially minded Managing Editor to join our team - a crucial position fundamental in defining and delivering our overall editorial strategy. This is a rare opportunity to continually elevate the brand as a modern popular culture title in line with the competition.

You will focus primarily on our print & branded content offering; but will work closely with the Managing Director to oversee the full editorial agenda across all of our output including digital when required.

As Managing Editor, you will be an ideas-driven content creator with in-depth comprehensive knowledge of current and future trends in music, style and culture that go beyond the cliché. The ideal candidate will be already familiar with Notion’s content and tone of voice and will have proven experience in magazine publishing and an interest in creating solutions for where editorial and commercial worlds meet.

You will be working across multiple content streams and will be responsible for producing and curating engaging content with two major focal points. The first being our reader, who are avid fans of the brand and always expect the best quality across all output. The second being our brand partners, who we collaborate with to create innovate content solutions that add value to their brands.

You will have a passion for the different verticals of lifestyle & entertainment journalism – music, film, TV, art, fashion and culture - and be able to discover talent and stories that will attract, engage and entertain a global audience, as well as the world’s most cutting-edge brands and their decision makers. MAIN DUTIES

Overall

Oversee all editorial content across all platforms. Ownership of the creation and execution of the company’s editorial strategy including:

  • Print
  • Branded content
  • Experiential
  • Digital (when required alongside a Digital Editor)

Take full ownership of the title, from inception through to publishing, create an innovate content calendar, commission and write copy and manage the full production workflow. Ultimate responsible for producing the magazine on time and within budget to the full satisfaction all brand partners.

Writing & Commissioning

  • Write, edit and publish content
  • Commission content creators – from writers to videographers – to create magazine content that is on brand, on time and on budget. Apply an editorial eye to polish and ensure a consistent tone of voice.
  • Commission talent and artists including outreach, communication & negotiation.

Content & Production

  • Working with relevant colleagues, to evolve all aspects of content in print and accompanying platforms, ensuring our output continues to meet the needs of the popular culture, music & style communities.
  • Define the magazine’s identity to ensure its on-brand for our desired demographic. Ensure our voice and content is attractive to existing and potential brand partners across various market opportunities.
  • Ensure all print commissioning and content creation is digital-friendly.
  • Collaborate with the Art Director to produce a creatively striking product that stands out in the marketplace.
  • Ensure the brand's editorial standards are met, relevant copyrights have been cleared and any other legalities are complied with.
  • Management of production workflow and attend content creation shoots regularly as required.

Audience & Development

  • Drive the development of new and existing audiences through the use of relevant insights, with an understanding and ability to interpret such data.
  • Learn from data & analytics to inform future content plans and ideas.

Commercial

  • Work regularly with the Managing Director to devise content ideas and experiences for projects with all relevant partners.
  • Partner with the wider team when required to ensure all on and off platform commercial partnerships are executed as expected.

Management

  • Monitor and maintain all aspects of the editorial budget.
  • Leadership and management of a small editorial team.

Networking

  • Maintain a strong network with relevant and key contacts in the industry.
  • Act as an effective brand ambassador for the brand in the market – both at shoots, content creation days and organised and external events.
  • Work as an integrated member of a talented l team. Contribute to other brand extensions as needed and required.
  • Have your finger on the pulse of our industry; use your professional contacts and social media channels to be the first to identify the next big opportunity.

REQUIREMENTS

  • 4-5 years of experience publishing content at media publisher or similar, preferably working across multiple mediums (print, digital and commercial).
  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of the processes required to produce photo, video, audio and written content.
  • Super organised and meticulous with detail and able to juggle numerous tasks, with an outstanding approach to planning and scheduling editorial.
  • Excellent written skills – fluent English and able to write to style guidelines.
  • Experience in popular culture writing and ability to commission to a tight brief and small budget.
  • Experience of working with global, non-UK based, creative and content teams.
  • Existing contacts with established journalists and key industry figures including record labels, publicists, agencies and talent. Brand contacts would be a welcome bonus.
  • Experience of WordPress, computer packages (Google For Business, Microsoft), social media, analytics and tracking tools. Basic editing software experience (Photoshop, InDesign) would be a welcome bonus.
  • A can-do approach, creative and calm under pressure with an eye for a good story.
  • Attention to detail to be able to identify any foreseen delays to deliver content on a tight deadline.
  • An entrepreneurial spirit and creative, ‘out of the box’ thinker, with excellent problem-solving skills.
