Job Description

Who are we and what do we do?

We're the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) - a suicide prevention charity fighting to reduce the devastating impact of suicide in the UK.

We run a life-saving helpline for anyone affected by suicide or suicidal thoughts, and our website has loads of tools and resources packed with practical advice.

We also run vital campaigns to increase awareness, smash stereotypes, and change the culture around mental health and suicide.

So where do you fit in?

CALM are looking for a Graphic Designer to join our award-winning creative studio team. You’ll be full of ideas and design skills (obviously) - and ready to develop those skills by working with our senior creatives on a range of ambitious and innovative projects, with a focus on digital, social media and video.

Responsibilities?

You’ll be responsible for helping to drive the creative direction of content that smashes the silence around suicide - you’ll also have a good understanding of typography, layout, animation and art direction to help the team produce the best work possible. You’ll have a keen eye for detail and a desire to learn more and create engaging, stand out comms that really speak to our audience, promote our vision and help those who are struggling.

We’re lucky here at CALM that a lot of the work you see - on socials, on billboards, on screens - is created in-house. From BIG ideas to small jobs (yeah, you have to do some Google Slides designs and touching up photos sometimes, we all do), you’ll be working on a wide variety of projects - no day will be the same. From designing an editorial feature with Romesh Ranganathan or creating motion graphics for our new campaign film through to coming up with an idea for a billboard that will be seen across the country - there’s no limit to what you’ll work on. You’ll also get:

  • The opportunity to work in a creative and thriving team on lots of exciting projects
  • A nurturing environment to share your creative ideas - we always encourage everyone to get involved in projects, big and small
  • Mentoring from Seniors to help you improve your skills
  • The chance to make a difference and help loads of people (cheesy but true)

Collaboration is a big part of the job too, so you must be able to communicate well with others – discussing ideas throughout the entire creative process. We use music, art, comedy and everything in between to get our message across - so keeping a finger on the pulse of current trends is key to making our voice heard. We’re a small but busy team so If you do video-editing or animation, that’s a bonus - but your focus will always be on the design side.

What are we looking for?

  • Graphic Design qualification or similar.
  • Up to 4 years of working experience as a graphic designer.
  • Boss at Adobe suite – especially Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator, After Effects and Premiere Pro
  • Can pull a video edit together, ideally with decent motion graphics skills
  • Ability to work well within a team
  • Good time management skills
  • A talent for creativity and problem-solving
  • Confident delivering artworks in print and digital formats
  • Loads of experience making stuff for social

Desirable, but not essential:

  • Experience using Trello, Monday.com or similar project management platform
  • Experience using Figma

Why join CALM?

  • Unlimited annual leave
  • Nine day fortnight where you will be paid for a full-time role, but every other Friday is a non-working day
  • 6% employer pension contribution
  • 20 days full sickness pay
  • Healthcare cash plan
  • Wellbeing and health support including 1:1 counselling sessions
  • Progression opportunities within the business where and when appropriate

CALM is an equal opportunities employer, values diversity and is strongly committed to providing equal employment opportunities for all employees and all applicants for employment. Equal opportunities are the only acceptable way to conduct business and we believe that the more inclusive our environments are, the better our work will be.

If you’re interested in this exciting opportunity, apply now with a copy of your CV and portfolio of work and we’ll be in touch to discuss your application.

Location: Hybrid, with two days a week on site in London, SE1 8TG.

Salary: £30-34k per annum
