Motion Graphics Associate
Job Description
Innovation Unit is growing, so we are looking to expand our talent pool of graphic design associates who are keen to use their design skills to work on complex, large-scale social change programmes, on a freelance basis.
Our graphic design associates bring a range of competencies and expertise to the table and have different strengths across the various skills such as brand development, visualising new designs and systems model, creating new tools and frameworks, animation and illustration.
For the role of Motions Graphics Associate, we are looking for someone who can work alongside our in-house designer who can support us to visualise new system models and tools that will support our work to create social change.
We will be focusing on your portfolio during the application stages and how well it matches our requirements for the role. Experience and technical skills will be considered as complimentary but these requirements are not fixed.
This is an exciting role for a Motion Graphics Designer to broaden their portfolio in the non-profit and consultancy sector. You will be working across a wide range of different projects with different demographics.
JOB DESCRIPTION
- Working alongside the in-house graphic designer to create engaging, appropriate and inspiring design for a range of sectors.
- Taking complex information and concepts and making them accessible through strong use of storytelling and understanding of the demographic.
- Creating, presenting and delivering cohesive motion graphics from concepts through to final realised designs to a high standard.
- Interpret and interrogate briefs: analyse the root causes of problems set out in creative briefs and devise robust, original and compelling motion graphics.
- Deliver work of the highest quality, ensuring it meets with design industry standards and effectively competes within a commercial and aesthetic context with other organisations.
- Brainstorming different outputs to push ideas forwards, meet the needs of clients, and enable the work to have as much impact as possible.
- To design with accessibility in mind.
- Attend client/project meetings where needed: collaborate in multidisciplinary teams, recognising other people’s expertise, embracing learning and evaluation.
- Act as an advocate for high quality motion design on all assigned projects: offer guidance and advice to other teams on how design output can work.
- Respond to feedback – we often work with a diverse range of stakeholders, from system leaders in the public sector to vulnerable groups who use public services. We like to co-produce outputs with them and it is important to us that our graphic design associates are interested in collaboration.

- Knowledge on using a human-centered approach; understanding the audience need and developing a visual concept to suit them.
- Confident to brainstorm and work creatively with non creative colleagues to support them to expand their ideas and develop innovative outputs that capture the attention of many and will lead to real change.
- Strong interpersonal, presentation and communication skills necessary to present your solutions and to build trust and respect both with clients and the team.
- Ability to work with multidisciplinary groups to develop outputs that are inclusive and collaborative.
- We welcome people from all sector backgrounds.
EXPERIENCE
2+ years experience as a motion graphics designer for a non-profit organisation or agency.
Degree or equivalent in graphic design or creative field.
A portfolio that demonstrates:
- Strong motion graphics skills, showing a range of different styles and techniques.
- An example that shows a strong understanding of a demographic.
- An example of storytelling.
- At least one example that shows an excellent ability to condense complex information/data into an accessible format.
- Your ability to produce outputs that are inclusive of user and staff groups.
- Ability to develop outputs that capture the values of new services or approaches.
- Ability to take complex information and make it visually compelling and easy to understand.
- Knowledge of the latest trends in motion graphic design and ability to apply these to your work.
TECHNICAL SKILLS (at least 2 of the following)
- Adobe Illustrator
- Adobe AfterEffects
- Adobe Premiere Pro
- Adobe Animate
CONTRACT DETAILS
LOCATION
We have colleagues in London, Edinburgh, Greater Manchester, Yorkshire and places in between. Our main base is in London but we don’t expect you to be there, work can be completed online.
DAY RATE
Competitive day-rate depending on expertise and level of seniority.
TYPE
Freelance contracting.

HOURS
We are looking for people who can make themselves available 10 – 50 freelance days each year to work on Innovation Unit projects. We cannot guarantee how many days of work per year we provide, but will contact you whenever opportunities arise. We love having ongoing relationships with great graphic designers we work closely with.
