The Studio
The design studio sits within a much-loved public sector company within the human and social sciences sector. They support, fund, and celebrate research that helps us better understand people, cultures, and societies past and present. Their in-house marketing team plays a crucial role in promoting their work, events, publications, and initiatives to diverse audiences both in the UK and internationally.
Hybrid working is available as part of this role. Note: this is a fixed term contract of 12 months/1 year.
The Role
This role is the sole in-house designer responsible for bringing reports, campaigns and visuals to life through digital and print design. The postholder will use the brand guidelines and templates to work with teams across the organisation to produce materials for policy, research funding and events. Alongside this, the role holder will have the opportunity to work on internal creative projects for teams across the Academy. These are often multimedia and marketing campaign based.
Working with the Marketing and Brand Manager, this role will devise publication timelines the suit both the design process and the publication process. Their branding agency will support with wider brand work and larger campaigns. This role will act as an internal brand ambassador for the Academy’s brand, ensuring all Academy outputs adhere to the brand guidelines.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Design for digital, print and physical
• Create engaging, on-brand visual assets for digital and print use (reports, event collateral, infographics, social media, web banners, signage, etc.)
• Artworking across a variety of projects and documents, ensuring accessibility, optimised for screen or print, consistency and accuracy
• Create artwork from new briefs or update artwork for repeating projects set to a template
• Ensure artwork is production-ready and liaise with print suppliers when needed
• Support photography/image sourcing and editing, as well as occasional video and motion graphics projects
• Work with brand guidelines, templates and with their brand agency to ensure everything is on brand
2. Work with teams across the company to deliver projects
• Collaborate with internal stakeholders to develop creative concepts and bring them to life visually, especially on digital platforms
• Support campaign development with design input and creative execution
• Present creative concepts to internal clients, comfortably communicating ideas and responding to feedback
• Planning production to manage deadlines, building in contingency for deadline changes
3. Act as an internal brand ambassador for the company
• Help promote the use of the company brand by other teams, ensuring buy-in and compliance
• Maintain Microsoft 365 templates used across the company
• Update the brand guidelines platform and manage the photo library
The Ideal candidate:
Qualifications
No specific qualifications are required for this role, but the role holder should have strong experience working as an in-house designer for either another organisation or agency.
Working
• Strong communication skills
• Excellent interpersonal skills, able to negotiate with both internal and external stakeholders to find practical resolutions to challenges
• Have the ability to work collaboratively, under direction and autonomously with occasional conflicting demands
Knowledge and Skills
• Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop essential; After Effects or Premiere Pro a bonus), Figma
• Brilliant layout and typography skills, with a great eye for detail and ability to easily liaise between print and digital artwork
• Highly creative with proven ability to deliver imaginative and compelling visual communications for a diverse range of audiences, taking responsibility for design from initial brief to completion
• Good knowledge of repro, print and production processes with experience of artworking files for print
• Working knowledge of digital accessibility requirements including colour contrast and text formatting
• Interest in motion graphics
• Experience in workflow management, particularly managing timelines of multiple concurrent projects
• Experience working with brand guidelines to make creative decisions
• An interest in the subjects represented by the company
